Waste Wise at the Farmers Market

Four AIM Farmers' Markets - Stonestown, Grand Lake, Hayward and Newark - will be launching market waste stations in July. StopWaste.org granted AIM $5000 to implement a waste management program at our East Bay farmers' markets with the goal of ensuring that as much market waste as possible is either recycled or composted. Each market will be equipped with  banners, signage and containers, which combine to make the "Waste Wise Station" pictured below.

Waste stationsThe project has laid the groundwork for AIM to launch similar programs at all 9 of our markets - we look forward to introducing stations in the coming weeks. The Waste Wise Stations represent a significant step in AIM's efforts to minimize market waste, thus reducing the footprint of each market. Volunteers will be situated at the stations to assist customers with sorting their trash. If you'd like to join us as a trusty Waste Wise Volunteer, please visit our volunteer page.

Many thanks to CUESA for sharing their prototype for a Waste Wise Station pictured above!

BYOB to Enter Plant Start Drawing at Hayward Farmers Market
GOEach week, customers who B.Y.O.B. (bring their own bags) to the Hayward Farmers Market will get a chance to enter a drawing to win an heirloom variety plant start. Stop by the information booth to participate. We'd like to celebrate you in addition to entering your name in the raffle!

Curious what you would do with your plant start, should you be the lucky winner? Check out Urban Farm Online, read the New York Times article Growing Vegetables Upside Down for some creative ideas, or ask one of our farmers who sells plant starts. You can also glean inspiration from the Golden Oaks Montessori School in Hayward, pictured above. The plant starts AIM donated this spring are thriving at their school garden. Well done, farmers in training!
